Linton- Life in the Collections

Walter Savage Landor:

35) Heroic Idyls.

London 1863

The loose mix of short theatrical sketches and dialogues in Landor’s last book, which was published shortly before his death in his eighty-eighth year, had a considerable influence on the conceptions of the miscellanies, which Linton would bring forth by his American private press. Besides a section of classical scenes and Latin verse, the Heroic Idylls also include remarks on Charles Dickens and Victor Hugo, odes to the Scottish poets Robert Burns and James B.V. Thomson and poetic responses to Lajos Kossuth and Napoleon III.
